How to Build Horse Stalls

Building horse stalls can be intimidating for someone who has never undertaken this type of task before. The first step will be determining what type of stalls will suit your needs the best. Horse stalls can be broken down to 2 major types: Support Post Style and Modular or Portable Style as they are sometimes called. First, we will look at the Support Post Style of horse stalls.

Support post horse stalls get their strength from support posts set into the surface of your barn floor. Normally, we suggest the depth of the support posts to be no less than 30" deep. The support posts should be at least 4" x 4" or larger. The support posts must be set on BOTH sides of the door opening as shown on the image below:

The opening for the stall door should measure approximately 4' center to center for the support posts. The additional support post placement will vary depending on if you are building 10' fronts, 12' fronts, 14' fronts or larger horse stalls. In many instances, you might be able to use the existing barn walls as walls for your horse stalls without having to install additional stall walls as shown in the drawing below:

Depending how your barn was built, you may find that the existing walls are not suitable for being used as horse stall walls. In this situation, you will need to install adequate stall walls suitable for containing horses. This can be done by lining the back of the stall with 2x4 lumber or heavy plywood and installing sidewalls to safely contain the horse without injury as shown in the drawing below:

Our support post style horse stall components give you excellent flexibility in modifying the stalls to fit your individual needs.

We suggest the use of tongue and groove 2 x 6 inch lumber for maximum strength and general appearance. Tongue and groove lumber interlocks with each board to prevent gapping when humidy levels change in the barn. We do suggest to build the stall with the bottom board of the stall being treated lumber since it will be in contact with urine and manure in the stall. The rest of the boards should NOT be treated lumber so your horse can not ingest the treating chemicals in the wood.

Lumber Requirements:

Stall Front (Including Door) 11 ea. 2" x 6" Tongue and Groove Boards
Grilled Side Wall 10 ea. 2" x 6" Tongue and Groove Boards
Solid Side or Back Wall 17 ea. 2" x 6" Tongue and Groove Boards

Modular or Portable Horse Stalls:

Modular horse stalls have brought horse stall construction to a whole new level. These stalls are pre-built in wall sections which can be easily set into place WITHOUT having to use support posts. These horse stalls can be used as both permanent stalls and as portable units. Simply put the sides and fronts into place, lock them together using the supplied brackets and slide your lumber into the prefabricated slots.

Our Modular Horse Stall Systems come with the brackets required to set your stalls in a variety of configurations to suit your individual needs. The stall fronts, side and back walls can be moved, added to, or removed as your situation changes. Free-standing stalls are simple to build using our modular stalls as the walls and fronts are locked together without having to set any support posts! Our painted steel and galvanized modular stalls already come with two swing-out sections, one on the sliding stall door and one on the stall front for feed. These stalls can be setup in 1/4 of the time of conventional stalls! If the stall fronts or walls need to be moved, simply remove the brackets and move the sections as you need. These are great as foaling stalls and have the strength to be used as permanent horse stalls.

In many cases, you can use your existing barn walls as stall walls and attach our modular stalls directly to the barn walls using our starter brackets as shown in the drawing above.

In some cases, the existing barn walls are not suitable for use as stall walls such as thin or sheet metal walls. In this situation, you may need to setup your horse stalls as shown here in the drawing above...........

Our modular horse stalls can be set against wood, steel and concrete. Our modular system can be used in a wide variety of ways to get both the look and practical use you need in your horse barn.

We suggest the use of tongue and groove 2 x 6 inch lumber for maximum strength and general appearance in your horse stalls. Tongue and groove lumber interlocks with each board to prevent gapping and bowing when humidy levels change in the barn.
